The Administration announced today that it will terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras by January 5, 2020, leaving the future of approximately 60,000 Hondurans in uncertainty as they face the risk of expulsion back to unsafe conditions.

Nielsen added that the 18-month delay will also provide time for Honduras to prepare for the return and reintegration of its citizens.

Homeland Security said it would work with Honduras and the U.S. State Department to "facilitate an orderly transition". In recent months the Department of Homeland Security has also ended protected status for El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti, Sudan and Nepal.

Nonetheless, Honduras has a high concentration of illegal immigrants coming into the US because of how unsafe the country has become. The think tank estimates $159.3 million would be lost in state GDP annually without these workers, according to data published by the organization in October 2017.

They're willing to cut back these protections from deportation to end people's work authorizations and then say somewhere down the road we'll find some congressional solutions....

"One thing I can tell you is I am not going to Honduras", she said, noting that numerous asylum-seeking migrants in a caravan that recently reached the U.S. -Mexico border are from Honduras.

Around 437,000 immigrants hailing from 10 countries have had temporary protected status, a designation created in 1990 to allow people from countries impacted by natural disasters like earthquakes or man-made disasters like war to have a short-term safe haven.

According to a DHS statement, Nielsen "carefully considered conditions on the ground" before making the Honduras decision.

Hondurans were the second-largest group of TPS recipients after Salvadorans, and many have lived most of their adult lives in the United States, running businesses, purchasing homes and raising American-born children.

Mr. Trump, his opponents argue, is effectively adding tens if not hundreds of thousands of people to the ranks of those in the USA without legal status. The designation ends January 5, 2020. "It unmasked the reality of the country ― our institutions are broken and the president, because of the elections, has no legitimacy".

The Department of Homeland Security made the announcement Friday.

Many of the Central Americans apprehended at the border, including families and children, are seeking asylum or other relief in the U.S. The Trump administration is seeking powers from Congress to restrict access to asylum.

The Honduran government "deeply" lamented TPS termination.

In calling for stricter immigration laws in an attempt to crack down on gang violence, Trump referenced the speech he made in 2015 when he announced his candidacy for president. White House chief of staff John Kelly, who preceded her at the helm of DHS, pressured her to end the protections, The Washington Post reported at the time.
