Thousands of teachers and their supporters descended on the North Carolina state capital to demand higher pay and more money for schools.

Thousands are downtown wearing red in an effort to get lawmakers to hear their voices.

"According to the NEA, North Carolina Ranked #2 in the United States for fastest rising teacher pay in 2017", Republican Senator Phil Berger, president pro tempore, said in a comment on Twitter posted during the march.

Following the march, educators met with lawmakers before taking to Bicentennial Mall for speeches by Gov. Roy Cooper and more.

According to the National Education Association, North Carolina ranks 39th among the 50 states for average teacher salary, well behind the USA average of $58,353 in 2016.

Republican legislative leaders have said this year's planned salary increase of 6 percent would mark the fifth consecutive annual increase. But that still represents a 9.4 percent slide in real income since 2009 due to inflation, the union said.

Many school districts, including Cabarrus County Schools and Kannapolis City Schools, made the day an optional teacher workday because of the amount of teachers who requested off for the day. She said lawmakers have let teachers down by failing to equip them properly to do their jobs. "Now we need to put our money where our trust is", Cooper told cheering protesters in red T-shirts who filled a plaza outside the legislature.

While low pay makes teaching a struggle, just as frustrating is that teachers spend hundreds of dollars a year out of their own pockets to keep classrooms on track, said Patrick, who's been teaching for four years.

"I don't know of any legislator who isn't laser-focused on education issues at this session", Conrad said.

"Some teachers just feel that the time has come".

"A couple of teachers from my school went to rally but I have a two month old baby and we're not in daycare yet and my husband works".

"Education is a profession that needs to be respected and for so long we haven't been respected", Powell said.

"We support offering different learning environments in hope of determining which is the best option for every child", she said.

Their demands are also political.

Teachers in Kentucky and Colorado have also staged walkouts and sickouts, calling for raises and protesting changes in their pension plan. The state spent $8.93 billion this year on education - the most in fifteen years - despite inheriting massive debt when they took over from Democrat-controlled legislature in 2011. Sales taxes that reach more people now make up a bigger share of the state budget.

Meanwhile, nearly all of the additional $2 billion the state is spending this year compared to six years ago has gone into education, including public universities and community colleges. Some Triad GOP legislators said they were not informed of the opportunity or had previously scheduled caucus meetings and constituent appointments.

According to the National Education Association, the average starting salary for teachers during the 2016 - 2017 school year, in North Carolina is about $37,514.
