"We're going to see what happens", he was quoted as saying by the USA media.

But the North's Kim Kye Gwan countered that Pyongyang's angry statements were "just a backlash in response to harsh words from the United States side that has been pushing for a unilateral denuclearization". Global journalists were present, but the US government can't verify the site's destruction.

Trump said the two countries are talking and both sides want to have the meeting that was supposed to be held in Singapore.

Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea had appreciated Trump having made the bold decision to work toward a summit.

Town said Trump's moves had undermined his chief emissary to the North, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, since it had appeared that hard-line national security adviser John Bolton had captured the president's ear. Trump cited North Korean hostility in cancelling the summit.

Earlier comments by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, seen as a driving force behind the summit and just returned to Seoul from a meeting with Trump in Washington, suggested that the South, a top U.S. ally and host to 28,500 United States troops, was blindsided by Trump's statement.

Mr Trump's decision to pull the summit is understood to have followed comments from North Korean diplomat Choe Son Hui, who referred to Mike Pence as a "political dummy".

While the Trump administration had insisted on North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear program, Pyongyang had always couched its language in terms of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Aside from the backlash Mr Trump has received for withdrawing his support for the summit, the US President is also getting mocked for his grammar skills.

"We remain unchanged in our goal and will to do everything we could for peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and humankind, and we, broad-minded and open all the time, have the willingness to offer the USA side time and opportunity", he said.

But he said talks could still go ahead "at a later date". While China may have been wary of the pace of diplomatic activity between the two Koreas and Washington in recent weeks, it certainly does not want a return to the tension of the pre-Olympics period when the Trump administration was threatening military strikes on its doorstep, and China had little choice but to play a supporting role in the US pressure campaign.

A number of Twitter users have printed out the White House letter and taken it upon themselves to grade it - covering the one-page text with red pen.

The president first discussed re-entering peace talks early Friday when he tweeted, "Very good news to recieve the warm and productive statement from North Korea". "We believe that the only realistic way to resolve the military conflicts surrounding the Korean peninsula and achieve a peace regime and denuclearization is dialogue and negotiation", she said in a statement.

But he called the meeting a "missed opportunity", saying "some day, I look very much forward to meeting you".

Trump, who considers himself a master dealmaker, has confounded aides and allies at every turn of the fateful flirtation with the North.

Next, the meeting can only take place in one place: South Korea, with the best option being in the stark setting of the Demilitarized Zone.

"If it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th", he wrote, adding the meeting could be extended further if necessary.

"They very much want to do it; we'd like to do it", he said.

In Pyongyang, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea's criticisms of certain USA officials had been a reaction to American rhetoric and that the current antagonism showed "the urgent necessity" for the summit.
