Venezuela expels U.S. diplomats, rejects sanctions

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro announced Tuesday that he is expelling the top two US diplomats in the country in retaliation for USA sanctions put in place by the Trump administration after what US officials called a "sham" election.

He said, "They must leave the country in 48 hours in protest and in defense of the dignity of the Venezuelan homeland... Enough with the conspiracies", Mr.

White House officials unveiled the latest executive order against Maduro less than 24 hours after the embattled populist leader secured another six-year term in an election that drew claims of voter fraud and corruption. "We've never seen a country as wealthy as Venezuela is ... dive into such a death spiral so quickly by such a group of individuals determined to enrich themselves at the expense of millions of people".

In a congratulatory message on Saturday, Rouhani said the successful, calm and healthy elections recently held in Venezuela under the shadow of economic sanctions and foreign powers' threats was a great success and victory for the Venezuelan government and nation.

Mauricio Macri and the Lima Group have both rejected the legitimacy of the recent elections in Venezuela.

Mainstream opposition called for a boycott and turnout was 46 percent compared with 80 percent in 2013's presidential election.

A social crisis years in the making has worsened as Venezuela's oil production - the source of nearly all of its foreign income - has collapsed to the lowest level in decades and financial sanctions by the Trump administration have made it impossible for the government to renegotiate its debts.

If Trump doesn't stop buying oil from Venezuela, why should we take economic measures against Maduro?

Maduro, whose second term will begin next January, won 68 percent of the vote.

He promised to spend the next two years before scheduled congressional elections repairing an economy he says has been badly damaged by mafias backed by Colombia and the U.S.

"This is my first visit but it won't be my last visit to Merida or to Venezuela", he said. So far, the European Union has slapped sanctions on only seven Venezuelan regime members, and most Latin American countries have yet to do it.

I agree. Western democracies and Venezuela's domestic opposition should act fast, because - despite Venezuela's economic collapse - time may be running in Maduro's favor. They also expressed the possibility of providing financial support to global groups to strengthen the institutional capacities of countries in the region to deal with the migratory flow of people.
