Florida, Mississippi and Alabama declare emergencies ahead of storm Alberto
A Flood Watch continues for all of South Florida through 8 pm Sunday evening and the National Weather Service could extend it into Monday
28 May, 2018, 17:15
The storm has been rather disorganized for most of its life over water (thus the "subtropical" classification), but has recently become more tropical in nature.
Tropical Storm Warnings continue for almost the entire Gulf Coast of Florida, and a Storm Surge Watch continues for coastal regions from the Nature Coast to Pensacola. Altogether we're looking at a solid 2-3 inches of rain from Alberto with locally-heavier amounts possible where heavy storms set up.
It also maintains a storm surge watch along the US Gulf coast from Crystal River in western Florida to the Mississippi-Alabama border.
Meteorologists are calling Alberto a 'subtropical storm.' What the heck is that?
Alberto, the first named Atlantic storm of 2018 which spun up days before the formal start of the hurricane season, is forecast to pack maximum sustained winds near 50 miles per hour (85 kph) and dump as much as 12 inches (30 cm) of rain, slamming an area from MS to western Georgia, it said.

Locally, the highest winds were reported at New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport, with 35 mph wind gusts for several hours and sustained winds of 20-21 mph. Because of expected deteriorating weather, the sandbag distribution points will not be open Sunday, the county said.
According to an update on the NHC, the centre of the storm is due to hit areas on the gulf coast Sunday night or early Monday, but heavy rainfall and tropical storm conditions will reach the area ahead of the storm's centre.
Gulf Coast residents should "take this storm seriously", the National Weather Service said early on Sunday, as Subtropical Storm Alberto drove north, threatening heavy rains and winds to the southern coastal states.
For us, the workweek is rather quiet with the best chance of storms not popping up until Friday afternoon. Skies will remain a mix of sun and clouds again throughout the day and southerly winds will keep moisture in the area making for a muggy feeling day as well. The storm prompted Florida, Alabama and MS to launch emergency preparations over the weekend amid expectations Alberto would reach land sometime Monday.
