An undocumented Malian migrant who saved the life of a four-year-old boy in Paris is to receive French citizenship.

Mamoudou Gassama, a Malian immigrant, is now being called the "Spider Man" of Paris.

Mamoudou Gassama captured the spotlight after a video emerged online showing him rescuing a four-year-old boy.

The video footage revealed Gassama climbing the the four floors in other 3o seconds while the crowds below cheered.

While being interviewed by Macron, he described the moment he saw the young child dangling from the railing on the fourth floor of the apartment building, as he passed by on Saturday at 8 PM on his way out for the evening.

"I did it because it was a child", French newspaper Le Parisien quoted Mr Gassama as saying.

The boy's mother learned the news of the rescue on Reunion Island - the French Indian Ocean territory where she and the father were born and where she still lives.

Gassama told Macron he tried to cross the Mediterranean in March 2014 to reach Italy, but was caught by police.

Hidalgo said Gassama told her that he arrived from Mali a few months ago and wished to stay in France.

"I ran. I crossed the street to save him", he told Macron during a filmed portion of the meeting.
