"In a tweet celebrating his pardon, D'Souza said "(President Barack) Obama & his stooges tried to extinguish my American dream & destroy my faith in America.

Twitter had a torrent of emotions in response to the latest pardon, in which a man convicted of election fraud was pardoned by a president who constantly touts the unfounded claim such fraud is an urgent epidemic. "But now you have hope - you really have hope", Trump said. He was fined $30,000 and given a punishment of five years of probation, which would include eight months of living under supervision in a "community confinement centre".

Trump also said he might commute the 14-year prison sentence of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat convicted of corruption charges, and was considering pardoning a woman convicted of a drug-related charge after reality TV star Kim Kardashian discussed the case with him on Wednesday.

D'Souza allegedly coordinated donations to Long's campaign through friends and acquaintances.

"Worst news since their parents told them to get summer jobs", D'Souza tweeted.

"The President has the right to pardon but the facts are these: D'Souza intentionally broke the law, voluntarily pled guilty, apologized for his conduct & the judge found no unfairness".

At the time, the legal limit for an individual contribution was $5,000.

D'Souza made the anti-Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America", which was condemned by many critics, but has become one of the most successful political documentaries ever released, grossing more than $32 million.

In 2013, following the shooting of Trayvon Martin, D'Souza tweeted: "I am thankful this week when I remember that America is big enough and great enough to survive Grown-Up Trayvon in the White House!"

D'Souza is a former policy analyst under President Ronald Reagan and a prolific author well-known for works critical of Obama.
