Five dead, nearly 200 sickened in romaine lettuce outbreak

5 dead and nearly 200 sickened in romaine lettuce outbreak The Arizona growing season is long over so it's unlikely any tainted romaine lettuce is still in stores

It is unlikely that any romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region is still available in people's homes, stores, or restaurants due to its 21-day shelf life. Officials have still not targeted the exact source of the lettuce but have focused on Yuma, Arizona. On Friday, health officials said they have learned of four more - two in Minnesota and one each in Arkansas and NY. Eighty-nine people have been hospitalized, and 26 of them developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Two of the victims were from Minnesota, with the other three from Arkansas, California and NY.

Officials said that first illness began sometime between March 13 and May 12.

According to the latest CDC update, there have been a total of 197 illnesses, 89 hospitalizations and five deaths in 35 states. While almost 90 percent of those who fell ill reported eating romaine lettuce in the week before they were sickened, some told the CDC that they did not personally eat the lettuce but were in close contact with somebody who did.

In the past two weeks an additional 25 people have also become ill from eating the contaminated lettuce, the CDC announced.

Almost half of those who became ill had to be hospitalized.

They haven't been able yet to trace the affected lettuce back to one particular farm, processor or distributor, FDA authorities said in an update Thursday.

Romaine lettuce grows near Soledad, California, U.S., May 3, 2017.

Those infected with E. coli typically experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.

The outbreak is the largest in the United States since 2006, when spinach tainted with a similar strain of E. coli sickened more than 200 people.

Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.
