The grants, which the law caps at $125,000 for 2019, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Vermont could spend up to $125,000 on the incentives next year - enough to cover the expenses of 25 workers who max out their possible grants. Hence this new program, the New Remote Worker Grant Program, created to recruit young Millennial workers to Vermont.

Vermont will pay stay-at-home workers $10,000 to relocate to the state. The $10,000 grant is meant to help remote workers cover the cost of computer software and hardware, broadband access or upgrade, membership in a coworking space, and other work-related expenses.

"This looks like an opportunity for us to bring people into the state who might not otherwise be here", Lyons, a Democrat, told the Globe on Friday. "We need more people in the state and people participating in the workforce", said Joan Goldstein, the commissioner of Vermont's Department for Economic Development.

The new program comes as Vermont, like other rural states, faces an economy where high-paying jobs are increasingly found in expensive cities.

Vermont is, of course, famous for its maple syrup, producing almost two million gallons of the delicious sweet product in 2017. In order to become eligible, applicants must become full-time residents of Vermont after January 1, 2019. The average resident is older than the majority of the USA population and the state is concerned about a rapidly shrinking tax base. Workers will receive $5,000 per year after submitting reimbursement forms that prove they used the money for moving costs. According to Quartz, the state has only budgeted for a total of 100 people in the first three years of the program, with plans to allocate funding for an additional 20 workers in subsequent years.
