Microsoft buys popular coder hangout GitHub for $7.5 billion

A Microsoft cloud... sorta Is Microsoft acquiring GitHub?
Wayne Curry | 05 June, 2018, 00:49

Earlier in the day, reports were doing the rounds that Microsoft had acquired San Francisco-based popular software development platform GitHub.

It is used by employees at many big companies, including Microsoft.

According to Microsoft's announcement, the purchase still needs to go through regulatory review and the normal closing process, but it is expected to close by the end of of the year. It said Github would continue to operate independently.

GitHub has been a cornerstone of the open-source movement, in which software companies make their code public, encouraging others to find bugs and build other software on top of the code. GitHub was last valued at $2 billion in 2015, and it had raised approximately $350 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, IVP, and SV Angel.

"We will accelerate enterprise developers' use of GitHub, with our direct sales and partner channels and access to Microsoft's global cloud infrastructure and services", stated Nadella.

In early May, Microsoft revealed a new partnership with GitHub that was meant to bring the power of Azure DevOps services to GitHub users.

GitHub has become so valuable because it's at the very centre of nearly every development project out there right now. There is at least some expectation that Microsoft will incentivize developers to support Microsoft's Azure cloud platform, but in the Monday release, the company behind Windows and Xbox tried to assure developers that GitHub will remain as open and free as ever.

It's also a smart move by Microsoft, which has seen scorching growth in its cloud business over the past few years. He urged people to judge Microsoft's open-source commitment by its actions in the "recent past, today and in the future", subtly acknowledging that there were decades when Microsoft did not support open-source, to the consternation of many developers.

In August, GitHub announced that it was looking for a CEO to replace Chris Wanstrath, one of the company's co-founders.

Friedman says plainly that this isn't in the cards: GitHub has won over 24 million developers because of its openness to all tools and technology, and it wouldn't do to hamstring it now.
