Microsoft Reportedly Agreed to Buy Coding Resource GitHub

Microsoft reportedly had talks about acquiring GitHub Is Microsoft acquiring GitHub?

The developer platform GitHub, which is widely used for storing, sharing, and collaborating on code, will apparently soon be a Microsoft company. Together, the two companies will empower developers to achieve more at every stage of the development lifecycle, accelerate enterprise use of GitHub, and bring Microsoft's developer tools and services to new audiences.

Microsoft said GitHub will continue to operate independently and "provide an open platform for all developers in all industries".

Bloomberg said the decision to go to Microsoft was partly because of the company being impressed by Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella. GitHub calls itself the world's largest code host with more than 28 million developers using its platform.

Microsoft is confirming the rumors that it is acquiring the software development platform GitHub are true. GitHub was last valued at $2 billion in 2015, and it had raised approximately $350 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, IVP, and SV Angel. A considerable measure has changed from that point forward, and under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft is supporting numerous tastes of Linux and has utilized open-source models on some critical cloud and designer items.

In early May, Microsoft revealed a new partnership with GitHub that was meant to bring the power of Azure DevOps services to GitHub users.

By being able to work closer with GitHub and push its services onto the repository for developers, Microsoft is probably hoping that it leads to even more developers using their tools and systems for work - leading to more sales of Microsoft's products and services.

Microsoft has talked to GitHub, which hosts 27m software developers working on 80m repositories of code, on and off for a few years. Microsoft could also use data from GitHub to improve its artificial intelligence producs.

The deal reflects the company's ongoing pivot to open source software and seeks to further broaden its large and growing development community, Moody's analyst Richard Lane said. An incremental share buyback, beyond Microsoft's recent historical quarterly pace, is expected to offset stock consideration paid within six months after closing.
