'The world welcomes the remarkable events in the Korean peninsula brought about recently by the outstanding political calibre and wise leadership of Kim Jong-un, ' KCNA cited Assad as saying during the meeting with North Korean Ambassador Mun Jong Nam on Wednesday. Trump further said, in response to questions, that the transformation of North Korea was possible with Kim remaining in power.

"They want to develop as a country", Trump said of the topics discussed with Kim Yong Chol.

Kim Yong Chol is a former military intelligence chief and one of the North Korean leader's most trusted aides.

Speaking to journalists after the North Koreans departed, Trump initially said the letter was "very nice" and "very interesting", but minutes later said he had not read the letter yet and didn't open it in the meeting, joking that he could be in for "a big surprise".

Trump and Pompeo walked Kim Yong Chol to his vehicle.

Mr Kim's arrival in Washington came a day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that he was confident negotiations with Pyongyang were "moving in the right direction".

Kim Jong Un, in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister on Thursday, complained about the USA trying to spread its influence in the region, a comment that may complicate the summit plans.

Pompeo was in the room as Trump and Kim Yong Chol met.

They also share in their worldwide isolation: North Korea over its nuclear weapons programme and Syria over its brutal response to opponents of Assad's rule during its seven-year civil war.

The letter from Kim Jong Un had to first be inspected by U.S. officials before it was delivered to the president, a White House official confirmed. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) tweeted after Trump announced the cancellation of the meeting. Pyongyang responded with a temperate statement indicating a desire to still hold the summit.

He traveled from NY to Washington, D.C.in a black sport utility vehicle and arrived at the White House a little past 1 p.m. Friday. "I don't see that happening". "It's a process. It's all a process".

"They are meeting to see what needs to be done in the two weeks that remain", a senior United States official said. "But the relationships are building, and that's a very positive thing". It doesn't mean it gets all done at one meeting; maybe you have to have a second or a third.
