California Republicans see ray of hope in Democratic bastion

Democrats appear to avoid lockouts in California primaries Primaries end in 8 states; Gavin Newsom wins primary for Calif. governor race

Berkeley News: In November, Californians will replace Governor Jerry Brown with either Gavin Newsom, a Democrat and former mayor of San Francisco, or John Cox, a Republican businessman from San Diego.

GOP gubernatorial candidate John Cox came in second in the primary election, securing a spot to face off against the Democratic frontrunner, current Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom.

In New Mexico, Democratic Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham won her party's nomination in the race to succeed the departing Republican governor, Susana Martinez. From being a classic battleground state for years with most recently a distinct Democratic advantage (Obama carried it by 8.5 points in 2008), Iowa was suddenly more Republican than Texas.

The NYT adds: "Mr. Cox's showing represented a major tactical victory for national Republicans as they seek to protect seven Republican-held congressional seats in California that Democrats are targeting as they try to recapture the House".

Democratic state Sen. Josh Newman will be replaced by former Republican Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang after he was recalled for voting to raise gas taxes past year. Yet the winners and losers in California's most competitive races could take days to sort out given the state's unique election laws.

While the results of the primary helped quell fears that Democrats would be shut out of the most competitive California races, most of those battles will still be two-party affairs, with Democrats appearing to have candidates making it onto the ballot in all 53 of California's congressional races, while Republicans were shut out of just 10 districts.

They are two candidates with a very different vision.

Many pundits believe Cox doesn't have much of a chance in November because there are so many more Democrats in the state of California than Republicans. In order to regain control of the House, they must win back 23 seats, which is sure to be challenging, despite promising signs so far. David Young will face Democrat Cindy Axne, who won 58 percent of her party's vote.

But Republicans, led by Allen and others, began organizing a statewide effort to put a repeal of California's new gas tax on the November ballot.

Much of the day's drama focused on women, who fought to make history in some cases and to avoid disaster in others. Dianne Feinstein did win her party's nomination Tuesday. After years of decline, Republicans account for an anemic 1 in 4 voters in California.

Voters picked final candidates in races in Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and California on Tuesday.

It may be as close to good as the state's second biggest political party can hope for in California in 2018.

"Donald Trump and the billionaire class should consider this victory a warning shot: The blue wave is coming", Haaland said in a statement. Even though Republican Diane Harkey was the top finisher, the next three finishers on the list are all Democrats, with Mike Levin finishing in second.

President Donald Trump's approval has moved to 44 percent among registered voters, according to a new poll from NBC/WSJ, an improvement from the 39 percent approval he saw in April among all adults.

And in Central California, the House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes, a Republican, qualified for the general election ballot as well.

Final results had not come in for many battleground districts Wednesday morning, but Democrat challengers looked to have secured runoff spots in a lot of them.

But Democrats have neither a president nor a clear leader who can send that kind of signal. For the most part, it looks like November will see another conventional midterm election, featuring establishment candidates from both corporate parties. Mr. Trump said on Twitter Wednesday morning. After all, since World War I, there have been only three midterm elections in which the president's party didn't lose House seats: 1934, 1998 and 2002. There are two interconnected findings in the survey that suggest the Republican vision of what voters think about Trump and the GOP may be somewhat misguided.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well.
