Why Germany will beat Mexico

No one doubts Germany has a wealth of talent at its disposal for the World Cup - so much that Leroy Sane, Premier League young player of the year, didn't even make the squad.

They have been battering teams in World Cup openers for as long as any of the players on this pitch could remember.

It may sound unusual to suggest but was Germany too offensive early on against Mexico and too willing to play a high line?

Carlos Salcedo almost diverted a teasing cross into his own net, while Timo Werner hit tamely at Ochoa when an umarked Julian Draxler appeared the better option.

Mexico can dream of going better than a consistent record of reaching the last 16 of the last six World Cups and perhaps of improving on the quarter-final they last reached in 1986. Kimmich nearly netted with an over-head kick from 12 yards before Julian Draxler saw a deflected effort go wide of the far post. Reus also hammered a volley over from a narrow-angle before a frenetic finale saw Julian Brandt, just on for Werner, smack the outside of the post with a thunderous effort from 20 yards.

After his woeful display, it will be interesting to see whether Joachim Low acts and brings in one of Ilkay Gundogan or Leon Goretzka for their second game vs Sweden.

What's the latest news on the two teams?

Let the games begin!

World Cup fever is everywhere.

Germany is bidding to become the first team to retain the World Cup title since Brazil in 1962, and until Sunday hadn't lost an opening game since 1982. Mexico were aggressive off the ball, pressing and hounding the Germans, who were often ponderous in possession.

Predict your World Cup victor!

Mexico know they are not favourites, but a good performance would be a strong statement to start the World Cup.
