Key Trump Senate ally asks for halt to family separations

Poll: Should DHS separate families crossing the border? ‘I Don’t Know’: Homeland Security Chief Kirstjen Nielsen Is Asked Where Are The Girls?

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an executive order Monday forbidding the use of state resources "for the objective of separating children from their parents or legal guardians on the sole ground that their families are in violation of federal immigration laws".

Democrats said the images of children being held in cages in border facilities, some crying for their parents, would be a moment remembered in us history.

But Trump made it clear that this action is temporary and that he fully expects Congress to take more decisive action and pass immigration legislation that previous presidential administrations have struggled with for years. That's what he did on Wednesday.

The new order means that immigrant families will still be prosecuted for entering the country illegally, though now they will be detained together "indefinitely" at facilities that still may need to be built, as The New York Times reports.

The topic is the horrendous policy implemented in recent weeks by the Trump administration to separate thousands of Central American migrant families caught trying to illegally cross the U.S. -Mexico border.

House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters that one of the bills would increase funding to the Department of Homeland Security to source housing and care for families during criminal proceedings against parents. Numerous children separated from their families have been held in detention centers. The administration would want to keep them longer so they can stay with parents. An assessment is expected Thursday at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas.

Also playing a role in his turnaround: First lady Melania Trump.

The president told the GOP caucus that he supports its efforts to pass either of the two immigration bills the House will consider this week, Republican lawmakers said to reporters following the meeting.

Several White House aides, led by adviser Stephen Miller, have encouraged the president to make immigration a defining issue for the midterms.

On Tuesday evening, protesters heckled United States homeland security chief Kirstjen Nielsen as she dined at a Mexican restaurant in Washington. "That is what we would like to do but if people won't work together to do it then our hands are really tied". "Republicans want security. But I am working on something - it never ends!" he wrote. The policy for adults who arrive with minors after an illegal border crossing was, and continues to be, that children can be taken from adults under three conditions: if immigration officials believe the child to be in danger, if they believe the adult is not the child's parent or guardian and/or if they arrest the adults.

Before Wednesday, the zero-tolerance policy required adults to be sent to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, while children were sent to centers run by the Department of Health and Human Services. The audio appears to capture the heartbreaking voices of Spanish-speaking children crying out for their parents.

Akemi Vargas, 8, cries as she talks about being separated from her father during an immigration family separation protest in front of the Sandra Day O'Connor U.S. District Court building in Phoenix. "Children belong with their families", he said.

As of mid-June, that "zero-tolerance" approach to illegal migrants, majority seeking asylum from violent conditions in their home countries, has resulted in about 2,000 infants and children placed in custody of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a six-week period while their parents face criminal charges.

Immigrant parents are much more likely to find their child or children if they have attorneys or advocates to track them down.

In 2016, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that child migrants who came to the border with parents and were held in custody must be released. Neither, though, did it require parents to be kept in detention, apart from their children.
