Russian Federation calls out USA ‘cynicism’ for rights council pullout

Russia calls out US ‘cynicism’ for rights council pullout Bolton: US Withdrawal from UN Human Rights Council Was 'Decades in the Making'

"It's the right decision to defund the Human Rights Council".

Why not send famed law professor and pro-Israel advocate Alan Dershowitz to be Washington's new ambassador to the Human Rights Council, Neuer suggested.

"You put yourself on the side of Russian Federation and China, and opposite the United States, on a key human rights issue", Haley wrote.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced regret over the United States decision, saying, "The UN's human rights architecture plays a very important role in the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide". She said the withdrawal notwithstanding, the USA would continue to defend human rights at the United Nations.

The US and Australia cast the only "no" votes.

United Nations officials said the USA would be the first member to withdraw from the council.

"Clearly, it's the right decision to get off", Mr. Bolton said during an interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends".

And the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank close to the Trump administration, defended the move, calling the council "notably incurious about the human rights situations in some of the world's most oppressive countries".

The Western group of countries in the council is expected to discuss the issue at their weekly meeting on Thursday, diplomats said.

Twelve rights and aid groups, including Human Rights First, Save the Children and CARE, had earlier warned Pompeo the USA withdrawal would "make it more hard to advance human rights priorities and aid victims of abuse around the world". The Human Rights Council enables abuses by absolving wrongdoers through silence and falsely condemning those who have committed no offense.

Since January 2017, it has announced its withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, left the United Nations educational and cultural organization and pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal.

The United Nations is stressing that human rights are "a pillar" of the organization's work and its secretary-general wants all member states to "engage actively" in the Human Rights Council and other parts of the U.N.'s "human rights architecture".

Washington's withdrawal is the latest USA rejection of multilateral engagement after it pulled out of the Paris climate agreement and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Charbonneau cited a commission of inquiry set up for war-torn Syria, saying that it "has been working for the last seven years uncovering ghastly abuses and reporting publicly on them"; the establishment of a fact-finding mission on Myanmar, "where we've seen ethnic cleansing on a scale that is mind-blogging"; as well as "looking at the problems in South Sudan, Burundi, Congo and North Korea".

Under President Barack Obama the USA was elected for a maximum of two consecutive terms on the council by the UN General Assembly. Members serve for three-year terms and can serve only two terms in a row.

Under President George W Bush, the USA boycotted the body for three years after its establishment 12 years ago.

"We have lost a member who has been at the forefront of liberty for generations". After a year off, it was re-elected in 2016.
