"They have agreed to drop [the lawsuits] and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter", District Court Judge Lucy Koh announced today. It was unclear how this week's ruling would affect that settlement.

Apple's lawsuit claimed Samsung, now the world's biggest handset maker, copied the design and other features of the iPhone as the smartphone market was exploding.

In May this year, Samsung had lost the appeal against the initial verdict in which Apple had won the patent infringement claim.

In the most recent stage of the case, Samsung was ordered by a federal jury to pay Apple $539 million in damages.

It was the flawless start to their campaign, making Japan the first Asian country to defeat a South American team at a World Cup. Princess Hisako of Takamada appeared at Mordovia Arena in Saransk , where Japan beat Colombia 2-1, and waved to spectators.

The Court filing also states that the "remaining claims and counterclaims in this action are hereby dismissed with prejudice", and another case can not be filed on the same claim.

The good news is that we now have an end to the latest one which has been going on for seven years, according to documents filed with the Northern District Court of California.

Those design elements were protected, prompting the jury to award Apple all the profits from sales of smartphones containing those features, Samsung lawyers said in their filing.

In its 2011 complaint, Apple wrote: "Instead of pursuing independent product development, Samsung has chosen to slavishly copy Apple's innovative technology, distinctive user interfaces, and elegant and distinctive product and packaging design, in violation of Apple's valuable intellectual property rights". "It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple". The dispute costed both companies billions of Ringgit in litigation costs and penalties over the years, but it also changed the way patent laws worked in the US. The court originally sided with Apple in 2012, ordering Samsung to pay more than $1 billion in damages.
