The United States has a plan that would lead to the dismantling of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs in a year.

A source familiar with China-North Korea relations explained that such a request for security carries the implication that "China will clearly support and defend the regime if the dictatorship is shaken by an influx of information and other factors as it implements economic reforms and opens up its economic system".

United States Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) mocked President Donald Trump on social media Saturday morning, sarcastically saying that reports of North Korea continuing to expand its nuclear program just weeks after a summit between the two countries could not possibly be true.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has attempted to walk back Trump's comments, telling a Senate panel last week that North Korea still remained a nuclear threat.

"If they have the strategic decision already made to do that and they are cooperative, we can move very quickly", Bolton said.

"Physically we would be able to dismantle the overwhelming bulk of their programs within a year".

The North Koreans may have stopped missile and nuclear tests in recent months, but as one USA official briefed on the latest intelligence told NBC, "there's no evidence that they are decreasing stockpiles, or that they have stopped their production".

Kim agreed to the "complete denuclearization" of North Korea at a summit with Trump in Singapore in June, but the latest activity on certain North Korean sites seems to run contrary to the Kim regime's promises of disarmament.

He said the administration was well aware of North Korea's track record over the decades in dragging out negotiations with the U.S.to continue weapons development.

He said the one-year program the U.S.is proposing would cover all of the North's chemical and biological weapons, nuclear programs and ballistic missiles.

"There's not any starry-eyed feeling among the group doing this", he said. "We're well aware of what the North Koreans have done in the past".

Over the weekend NBC News first reported that Pyongyang has in fact recently been increasing fuel production for nuclear weapons at several hidden sites.

Immediately following the summit, Trump was quick to claim there was "no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea". President Trump also highlighted that he envisions a great future for North Korea.

While some have questioned the rationale for a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin, Bolton told Fox News that the talks would "let them discuss these issues and see exactly where there might be room for progress or where they might find there's no room at all".

The North last month blew up its aged but only nuclear test site at Punggye-ri - where it had staged six atomic tests - in a show of goodwill before the summit.

Trump reiterated in an interview broadcast today that he thinks Kim is serious about denuclearization.
