19 injured, 1 dead in South Africa plane crash

"We suspect that the plane was on its way to the Wonderboom airport", said Mahamba.

The plane came down on rough ground about five kilometres east of the airport, hitting a small factory building, injuring two people inside.

Unconfirmed reports said one person was critically injured.

Images from the scene of the incident showed the aircraft broken into multiple pieces as rescue workers helped passengers and crew out of the smoking wreckage.

"There is smoke all over and paramedics are on the scene".

Mr Meiring said ER24 helicopters were on the scene to airlift any critical patients to hospital.

The ER24 medical service confirmed the fatality.
