
His toughness with Vladimir Putin in question, President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday he had told the Russian leader face to face to stay out of America's elections "and that's the way it's going to be".
Putin has denied the allegations.
The White House believes that the threat from Russian Federation still exists.
But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders says Trump was saying "no" to answering more questions, although he did go on to answer an additional question. "He does believe that they [Russia] would target U.S. elections again".
But during his CBS chat on Wednesday, Trump went as far as saying he personally confronted Putin when they met in Helsinki.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken the lead in working with all the 50 states, local governments and private companies to improve election security. I worked for the government for five years.
The DHS plans to provide on-site risk and vulnerability assessments to all states that request it.
Federal officials ultimately determined that at least 18 states had their election systems targeted in some fashion, and possibly up to 21 found scanning of their networks for possible vulnerabilities, according to a report issued by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in May.
In March, Congress provided the Election Assistance Commission with Dollars 380 million in funding for election assistance grants to states.
Sanders noted that Trump and his officials believe the Russian threat "still exists, which is why we are taking steps to prevent it".
Sanders called the legislation "hypothetical" and declined to say whether the president would back it.
