It's 'Up to' Rosenstein If He'll Be Impeached, Meadows Says

The former judge discussed the articles of impeachment introduced by a group of conservative House lawmakers late Wednesday against Rosenstein, the top Department of Justice (DOJ) official overseeing special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's Russian Federation investigation.

The articles were filed by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, leaders of the House Freedom Caucus and supporters of President Trump.

In May, after House Republicans threatened to impeach him for withholding investigative documents, he warned that "the Department of Justice is not going to be extorted". "Enough is enough", Jordan said in a statement.

A Justice Department official said the agency had no comment.

Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to discredit the Justice Department, and, by extension, the special counsel's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said on Twitter the articles of impeachment "were filed in bad faith and show extraordinary lengths to which House Republicans will go to protect Trump".

Democrats have criticized Republican efforts to pressure the Justice Department in recent months, saying they are attempts to undermine Mueller's investigation.

According to the Associated Press, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan hasn't endorsed this. It would require a vote in favor from a majority of the House and two-thirds of the Senate. A vote on impeachment would be a public loyalty test for Republicans. Meadows and Jordan could still force the issue on Thursday before lawmakers head home for the House's month-long August recess. Committee staff have been able to review the documents in a reading room at the Justice Department and then obtain copies of documents of interest - a laborious process being overseen by US Attorney John Lausch from Chicago.

He said Republicans may believe that Rosenstein is stonewalling their oversight requests, but the Department of Justice has a legitimate, lawful basis for keeping certain documents secret in a pending investigation.

Put another way, if seems more possible that instead of rooting out some secret government conspiracy to hide documents, these conservatives' frustration over access is rooted more in normal tension between information sharing between the executive and legislative branch.

In June, FBI Director Chris Wray testified that 100 FBI employees have been working around the clock to respond to lawmakers' requests.
