First Senate Democrat meets with Trump's Supreme Court pick

Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh, President Trump's choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, arrives for a private meeting with Sen.

Mr. Paul's support leaves Democrats with only a narrow path to defeating Judge Kavanaugh.

Senate Democrats, infuriated with Republicans for requesting only a portion of Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh's records from his tenure in the George W. Bush White House, are sending a wide-ranging request demanding that his entire paper trail be provided to Congress.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh, 53, as Supreme Court justice on July 9, calling him a man with "impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications, and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law".

"I have expressed my concern over Judge Kavanaugh's record on warrantless bulk collection of data and how that might apply to very important privacy cases before the Supreme Court", he wrote.

"I have made a decision to support his nomination", said Paul in a statement.

That's similar to the results of the HuffPost/YouGov survey taken just after Trump's July 9 announcement of the nomination, which found Americans split on Kavanaugh ― 33 percent favored his confirmation, 31 percent were opposed and 36 percent were undecided.

‘Russia will push hard for a Democrat win’
The White House is also inviting Mr Putin to Washington this fall, for a first visit of a kind since 2005. Instead, GOP leaders are considering new sanctions on Russian Federation .

The senator took to Twitter on Monday following a discussion with the nominee regarding Paul's concerns over Kavanaugh's prior rulings on privacy issues.

With Republican Sen. John McCain still back home in Arizona battling brain cancer, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell can't afford to lose a single Republican vote.

Manchin, who is facing a push in West Virginia to support confirmation, did not come out with a position on confirmation after the meeting, instead describing it as "productive".

Mr. Paul was one of three Republicans whom Democratic leaders hoped to sway to vote against confirmation, along with Sen. "Manchin making a craven political calculation once the outcome has already been decided", Morrisey said.

Senate Republicans are pledging a swift confirmation process that would elevate Kavanaugh, now a judge on the federal appeals court in Washington, before the Supreme Court's new term convenes October 1.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who is running against Manchin for Senate, said in a statement before the meeting the senator needs to stop "waffling". She was confirmed anyway, thanks to Democratic swing votes.

Democrats have countered that Kavanaugh's role in some of the defining - and polarizing - Bush administration debates should be part of the record they review while considering his nomination. Gallup, which has tested the reaction to most Supreme Court nominees since the 1990s, found that Kavanaugh's initial support was roughly comparable to that for failed 2005 nominee Harriet Miers.
