North Korea developing new missiles: report North Korea said to be working on new missiles
Leonard Rios | 31 July, 2018, 23:16

Mr Trump has insisted that progress has been made since the meeting...

What did the report say?

North Korea "is in the room as a member of the ASEAN regional forum among these 27 countries, so there will be discussions that are inclusive of North Korea", a senior State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un waves before departing Pyongyang to Singapore on June 10, 2018.

United States spy agencies said new evidence, including satellite photos, have revealed the country is creating a liquid-fueled ICBM at a research facility outside Pyongyang, according to The Washington Post.

According to The Washington Post, the officials cited satellite images that purportedly show activity at the Sanumdong military facility.

A man watches a TV screen showing what the North Korean government calls the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile, at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, in November.

The officials say evidence, including satellite photos taken recently, suggests that construction is underway on one or two ICBMs.

Independent missile experts reached the same conclusions this week based on images of vehicle movements around the Sanumdong facility.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will urge Asian countries at an upcoming meeting in Singapore to enforce United Nations sanctions on North Korea aimed at dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear programme, a US official said on Tuesday (Jul 31).

"We see them going to work, just as before", one official told the Post.

Satellite imagery of the Sanumdong facility shows that the site is "active", Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) told the Washington Post.

Besides reducing the amount of troops and weapons they are armed with, McBride said talks about the disputed sea border between North and South Korea could also be on the agenda.

Intelligence collected by United States agencies showed, however, that senior North Korean officials have discussed plans to deceive Washington about the number of nuclear warheads and missiles they possess, as well as the types and number of facilities, and to rebuff worldwide inspectors, according to the Post.

Last year, however, The Diplomat reported that Pyongyang had test-fired a new solid-fuel motor that could be used to upgrade earlier liquid-fueled missiles.

But the actual details of the process, including how and when the North's nuclear programme is to be dismantled, have yet to be worked out. "Yes, they continue to produce fissile material".

News that the North Koreans are potentially developing new weapons would be a heavy blow to President Donald Trump's efforts at diplomacy with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

This indicated that there had not been a complete stop in activity during the summit talks.
