Apple Inc. on Thursday became the first USA company to surpass $1 trillion in market value, underscoring the iPhone maker's explosive growth and its role in the technology industry's ascent to the forefront of the global economy and markets.

The tech company, launched from a garage in 1976, has been on a steady climb through the years, revolutionizing personal computers and phones with its Macs and iPhones.

That price translates to a $1 trillion market cap based on the current estimated number of outstanding shares. Apple briefly hit the $1 trillion mark before falling back below it amid fast-moving trade.

Previous year its sales hit $229bn, with profits of $48.4bn, making it the most profitable listed U.S. company. In a call with investors, CEO Tim Cook also touted growth in other areas such as smart home products, wearables, and services like the App Store and Apple Pay. Jim Cramer, for example, recently argued that Apple shares could start approaching $300.

Apple's stock has risen more than 50,000% since it first listed in 1980.

Apple said it expects revenue of $60 billion to $62 billion for the fiscal fourth quarter that ends in September 30. Amazon is valued at $870 billion, Google-parent Alphabet has a market valuation of $850 million and Microsoft's market cap is at just under $815 billion.

Apple's market milestone represents a remarkable turnaround for a company that was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy in the late 1990s, just before the return of visionary co-founder Steve Jobs.
