The U.S. military believes while most of these remains are American, some could also be troops from other countries that fought in the war.

President Trump said early Thursday that he is looking forward to meeting again soon with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, despite satellite imagery that suggests the North is constructing new missiles.

In a tweet, Mr Trump also thanked the North Korean leader for his "nice letter", without elaborating.

The Commander-in-Chief praised Kim's decision to return the remains just hours after Vice President Pence received the war heroes at a ceremony in Hawaii; saying he appreciates the regime's "kind action".

Trump also took to Twitter earlier to praise an "incredibly handsome ceremony" in Hawaii, where Vice President Mike Pence helped welcome the remains to the United States.

The handover of the 55 caskets last Friday was part of the commitment Kim Jong-un made to Trump at the June 12th summit.

Pence said Trump secured a commitment from Kim during their June summit to return the remains of US service members who were killed in the 1950-53 war.

Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told senators that Pyongyang was continuing to produce fuel for nuclear bombs.

The United States and North Korea conducted joint searches from 1996 until 2005, when Washington halted the operations, citing concerns about the safety of its personnel as Pyongyang stepped up its nuclear programme.

North Korea previously returned the purported remains of foreign soldiers that turned out to be misidentified. It was the first repatriation of remains since 2005.

A USA defense official told VOA North Korea has provided nearly no information to help identify the individuals, and that the process could take months or years to complete.
