Special counsel reportedly offers to limit in-person questions in Trump interview

U.S. President Donald Trump arrives at a Make America Great Again Rally at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa Florida Trump calls Manafort prosecution ‘a hoax,’ says Sessions should stop Mueller investigation

Referring to an investigation that is examining his own actions, Trump called Mueller's probe "a awful situation" that should be stopped "before it continues to stain our country any further".

The White House claims the president's tweet was not a demand.

In response to the tweet, several Democrats said it appeared that the president was trying to influence the investigation, which has indicted almost two dozen Russian officials and cyberactors for allegedly interfering in the 2016 election.

Addressing speculation about the president's intention, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told a press briefing later in the day that the tweet is an "opinion", not an "order".

"It's not an order". "When I was a prosecutor, obstruction of justice was often hard to prove, requiring difficult-to-obtain evidence that the individual's actions were truly meant to interfere with an ongoing criminal investigation".

US President Donald Trump has ramped up his attacks on the Russian Federation investigation by demanding it end "right now".

Coats said the Russian meddling effort reached into the Kremlin itself. The two sides are still negotiating remaining points of contention, he added, including whether Trump could offer written answers and whether Mueller's team would be able to ask follow-up questions.

"How is it OK for Hillary Clinton to proactively seek dirt from the Russians by the Trump campaign met at the Russians request and that is bad?" A Justice Department spokeswoman said the department had no comment. Trump tweeted at Sessions hours after being updated by his legal team.

Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, is investigating whether the Trump campaign aided or abetted an attempt by Russian Federation to sway the 2016 presidential election, or tried to cover up the conspiracy.

Rosenstein in turn appointed Mueller and is the person with the authority to fire him.

The President has escalated his attacks on the Mueller probe in recent days, and his tweet on Wednesday comes on the second day of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's trial, the first case Mueller's team has taken before a jury.

Trump has repeatedly denied that his campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

"They ought to let them conclude their work. The president is stating his opinion, he's stating it clearly, and he's certainly expressing the frustration that he has with the level of corruption that we've seen from people like Jim Comey, Peter Strzok, Andrew McCabe", Sanders said.

Senator Orrin Hatch said he did not think Sessions had the power to end the probe and it would be unwise to do so.

Mr Trump called any talk of collusion "a Hoax".

The White House is feeling heat over election security, almost two years after intelligence officials determined that Russian Federation sought to influence the 2016 election by hacking Democrats and pushing phony news about Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in an effort to benefit Trump.

During the rally in Pennsylvania on Thursday, Trump did not mention allegations of interference or attacks on the USA democratic process. Both Giuliani and Trump have maintained there was no collusion.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said after Trump's tweet, "It's clear to me he's very anxious about it and he wants to prevent it any way he can".

Coats declined to comment on Trump's meeting with Putin, saying, "I am not in a position fully to understand what happened in Helsinki".

Writing on Twitter, Trump dismissed the charges against Manafort as "old charges [that] have nothing to do with Collusion" and questioned why the government did not tell him that Manafort was under investigation before he hired him to be part of his 2016 campaign.

"It is a piece of evidence".
