The Mendocino Complex fire is now the largest wildfire in modern California history, scorching more than 283,000 acres and frustrating firefighters as it continues to leap across natural and man-made barriers in Lake County. Two firefighters and four other people, including two children, were also killed. Dry, hot winds fueled both blazes, which have collectively charred almost 400 square miles (1,036 square kilometers) of brush and timber. Brown has also sought a presidential disaster declaration for the areas around the Mendocino Complex fires.

"California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amounts of readily available water to be properly utilized", Trump said.

Fire officials have said that 95 percent of all wildfires are caused by humans, from camp fires left unattended to careless smoking, to sparks from vehicles and improperly maintained power lines.

The Cedar Fire, which burned through 273,246 acres in October 2003, is the third-largest in state history and is still the deadliest on Cal Fire's top-20 fires in terms of fatalities directly related to the fire (15).

Crews battling the Mendocino Complex on Monday were focussing on keeping flames from breaking through fire lines on a ridge above the foothill communities of Nice, Lucerne, Glen Haven, and Clearlake Oaks, said Tricia Austin, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire.

More than 14,000 firefighters were battling the blazes across the state. He was killed July 29 by a falling tree while fighting the wildfire that has closed Yosemite National Park at the height of tourist season.

"Fires do not know boundaries or borders and as a firefighting service we are ready to respond both within Australia and overseas", he said. The two fires, which have threatened more than 9,000 structures, have not merged, but officials are counting them as one.

"It's the embers, not the fire itself, that destroy most homes", said Steve Conboy, a construction expert whose company develops fire-resistant chemicals to apply to wood.

Hurley said some temperatures could reach 43 C in Northern California over the next few days with 24 km/h winds fanning the flames.

Meanwhile, new evacuations were ordered Saturday near twin fires burning in Mendocino and Lake counties. "What seems like we should be in the peak of fire season, historically, is really now the kind of conditions we're seeing really at the beginning", said Pimlott.

The strike team has been prepping structures ahead of the fast-moving fire, making homes more defensible and increasing the chances of saving the residences.

Trump doubled-down on his earlier comments in a second tweet on Monday in which he accused the state "foolishly" diverting river water into the ocean, which environmental experts say is not accurate. The Mendocino Complex, which is 30 per cent contained, is still growing. They are now deployed in California, Oregon, and Washington.

"Congress and the president could help out with that by, rather than cutting fire funding, putting more money into basic" prevention efforts, he said.
