The aircraft crashed on a small island outside of the city.

Witnesses filmed the 76-seater plane performing loops and being chased by two F-15 military jets near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Washington state before it crashed in dense woodland on Ketron Island.

Witnesses reported seeing the plane being chased by military aircraft before it crashed near Ketron Island. There were no passengers aboard. I've got a lot of people that care about me.

Preliminary information suggests the crash occurred because the 29-year-old man was "doing stunts in air or lack of flying skills", the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said.

The incident fell under the ongoing mission of Noble Eagle, the air defense mission launched after the 9/11 attacks, Hillier said.

There was no indication that the incident was an act of terror, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said on Twitter.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee released a statement, thanking Air National Guard from Washington and OR for their quick response, and saying, "There are still a lot of unknowns surrounding tonight's tragic incident of a stolen Horizon Airline plane from Sea-Tac Airport". Horizon is owned by Alaska Air Group, Inc., which also owns Alaska Airlines.

The Bombardier Q400 is a turboprop airplane made for shorter flights, according to Alaska Airlines.

Alaska Airlines confirmed there was an "unauthorized take-off" of a Horizon Air plane from Sea-Tac airport around 9.50 p.m Friday evening (04:50 Saturday UTC).

Early reports indicated the man was employed as an airline mechanic, though Alaska Airlines later said on its blog that he was likely a "ground service agent employed by Horizon Air".

The governor of Washington, Jay Inslee, thanked the Air National Guard from Washington and OR on Twitter "for scrambling jets to keep Washingtonians safe".

Authorities called the man "Rich", and tried to convince the man to land the plane as he flew over Puget Sound. I don't know! I don't want to.

Operations at Sea-Tac airport, the largest commercial airpot in the Pacific Northwest, were temporarily halted during the incident, but resumed after the hijacking came to its tragic end.

"I thought they were practicing for an air show", he said. "It's going to disappoint them to hear that I did this".

"Oh man. Those guys will rough me up if I try and land there", the man responded, later adding "This is probably jail time for life, huh?"

Witnesses in the area posted videos to social media showing the 76-passenger plane, meant for short flights, doing unsafe ariel maneuvers while F-15 fighter jets scrambled behind it. His identity and condition are unknown. "I'm a broken guy who had a few screws loose. I was kind of hoping that was gonna be it". "Never really knew it until now".

He said he heard a loud "boom", then saw smoke coming from a spot in Puget Sound where the plane appeared to have crashed.

Spokesmen for the Transportation Security Administration, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration directed inquiries to local authorities.

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Saturday morning Trump is monitoring the situation.
