One chair will be occupied by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg while Twitter's CEO, Jack Dorsey will also be at the receiving end of some angry Republicans who claim the companies have shown evidence of bias against conservatives.

Congress has criticized the companies over the past year as Russia's interference in the 2016 elections and beyond became clear.

Senator Richard Burr, the committee's Republican chairman, said he expected the hearing would focus on solutions to the problem of foreign efforts to influence USA elections and sow political discord, with a jab at Google.

Before the hearing, President Donald Trump, without offering evidence, accused the companies themselves of interfering in the upcoming US mid-term elections, telling the Daily Caller that social media firms are "super liberal".

Twitter's Dorsey, who has come under fire in recent weeks for remaining more "hands-off," said the social network was unprepared for what the election brought to its platform. The committee rejected Google's offer to send its chief legal counsel, and neither the company nor its parent Alphabet sent their CEOs or chairmen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., said Google doesn't "understand the problem" if it doesn't want to work with the government to find solutions.

As of 9 a.m., Gordon was 60 miles southwest of Miami moving west-northwest at about 17 mph with sustained winds of 45 mph. A storm surge warning has been issued for the area stretching from Shell Beach, Louisiana, to the Mississippi-Alabama.

The testimony comes as some Republicans say conservatives have been censored on social media.

The statement from Dorsey released by a House panel covered questions about foreign influence operations on social media as well as accusations of political bias. Some Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have pushed the idea that Twitter is "shadow banning" some in the GOP because of the ways search results have appeared. "It's not fair to large portions of the population", Trump said at a press conference last week.

In the Senate, both Burr and Warner pressed the social media companies to do more.

Google did release written "testimony" from Walker ahead of the hearing, even though he was not expected to appear.

Google said Walker will be on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, adding that company officials first informed the Senate committee that Walker would be Google's representative in July. "It violated the values of our company and of the country we love".
