Trump addresses 'gutless' White House mole behind anonymous article

Like hundreds of other reporters in Washington, the Times' news staff is trying to find out the writer's name.

President Trump questioned if the article amounted to treason or subversion and said even liberals who hate him thought it was awful. But that doesn't mean it was a no-brainer to publish.

The article had referred to the anonymous author as only a senior administration official.

Pompeo said during a trip to India that he was not the author and condemned the Times for publishing it, while Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Mattis did not write the piece.

"The thing about the op-ed is that reading its text, you can think the writer is 'principled, ' as the NYT did. Using anonymous sources is a very important tool in the toolbox for my colleagues in the newsroom, so not judging". The op-ed marked another setback for a West Wing already battered by a litany of recent controversies that have left some aides demoralized. But journalists at other papers suggested that the piece by the anonymous official was simply too remarkable to ignore. "Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making", the official wrote, adding that aides work around Trump to make sure his desires are not enforced.

"After proper and extensive vetting, we would have run the piece".

In one eye-opening passage, the author said there was talk among members of the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution, which provides for the removal of the president if he is "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office".

"And that went through quite a bit of discussion before we went ahead and published", Ancrum told CNN.

Top Trump administration officials say they are not the writer of a New York Times opinion piece sharply critical of President Donald Trump.

On the morning of September 6, 2018, with speculation about Mike Pence still swirling, his spokesman took to Twitter to issue a denial, although it never directly says "he didn't write it".

Meanwhile, First Lady Melania Trump said: "If a person is bold enough to accuse people of negative actions, they have a responsibility to publicly stand by their words".

"Each decision has to be made on its own merits", Nicholas Goldberg, the editorial page editor of the Los Angeles Times, told CNN.

Trump is no stranger to bad press at this point - you may have even heard him complain about it from time to time - but he's really got his hands full this week, as the op-ed declaring an active "resistance" within his ranks came just days after very unflattering excerpts were released from Pulitzer Prize victor Bob Woodward's upcoming book "Fear: Trump in the White House", spurring President Trump to call for stricter libel laws on Wednesday.

Now the even bigger challenge falls to Dao's colleagues in the Times newsroom, which is separate from the opinion section.

Mr Pence told reporters: "Anyone who would write an anonymous editorial smearing this President who has provided extraordinary leadership to this country should not be working for this administration".
