Serena Williams has a shot at making history on Saturday at the US Open. "I always dreamed that I would play Serena in a final of a Grand Slam", Osaka said.

Osaka has played Williams only once before, defeating her 6-3 6-2 at the Miami Open in March, undoubtedly an experience from which she can draw additional confidence.

Osaka was born in Japan but left when she was three years old and raised in the United States.

Osaka has demonstrated extreme composure to go along with her power game and has only dropped one set while carving a path into the final. She was then asked "why" she wanted to play Williams so badly, and she looked at the reported confused before responding, "Because she is Serena".

If Williams is victorious, she will have equalled Margaret Court's insane record of 24 grand slam titles. Then she started feeling better.

The American returned to the tour in February and to Grand Slam action at the French Open in May, when she had to withdraw from the field with an injured chest muscle. "I would put 2018 into a dumpster and light it on fire", she told ESPN.com recently.

While that matchup might give Osaka a measure of confidence and will surely help her keep her nerves as she faces her idol, the result can more or less be thrown out the window - Serena was playing just her fourth match since returning from a 13-month absence due to her pregnancy.

At the age of 17 Williams became the first African-American woman since Althea Gibson in 1958 to capture a Grand Slam singles championship. "I love you (Serena)".

Williams' first Grand Slam title came in 1999 at the U.S. Open.

She's one of several young mixed-race athletes who are challenging Japan's traditional self-image as a racially homogenous country, including sprinter Asuka Cambridge and baseball player Yu Darvish. While Williams certainly appears to be very much on top of her game and has indicated no plans to walk away anytime soon, Osaka appears to be the future.

The Japanese player, shy and quirky off the court but a fierce fighter on it, defended magnificently, used the angles intelligently and, above all, reserved her best for the biggest moments.

The Japanese sensation can expect a tough test this time around but she has the game to test even the best in the business, which was evident during her title-winning run in Indian Wells.

Naomi Osaka rose to global prominence past year after defeating U.S. Open defending champion Angelique Kerber in the very first round through a stellar upset.
