CBS boss Les Moonves resigns after sex allegations

Report: Les Moonves Stepping Down As Chief Executive Officer At CBS CBS reaches deal with CEO Leslie Moonves amid new sexual harassment claims
Angelica Greene | 10 September, 2018, 18:59

Moonves, in a statement to The New Yorker, acknowledged three of the encounters while maintaining that they were consensual.

Moonves' resignation is effective immediately and marks an unfathomable reversal of fortune for the former actor and Broadway producer who transformed CBS into the nation's most-watched broadcast network, a ranking it has held for more than a decade.

Chief Operating Officer Joseph Ianniello will serve as President and Acting CEO while the Board conducts searches for a permanent replacement of Moonves.

At another time, she said an angry Moonves pushed her hard against a wall. "It is systematic, and it is pervasive in our culture", she said.

"It was quite a few times that those women would come back and say, 'I'm never going up there again, ' " Debra Williams, who was then spa director, tells Farrow, adding that a hotel official warned Moonves to stop the behavior.

"The appalling accusations in this article are untrue", Moonves told the New Yorker.

The donation, which will be made immediately, will come out of any severance that Moonves, one of the media world's highest paid CEOs, might eventually be given. "We believe them", Times' Up said in a statement on Sunday. The CBS board unanimously rescinded the dividend it previously approved which sought to dilute the Redstone family's control over the company.

The latest allegations were not addressed in CBS' announcement of Moonves' exit.

The organization Time's Up, which fights accusations of sexual misconduct, said the women had made "bone-chilling" accusations against Moonves.

Philadelphia Eagles beat Atlanta Falcons 18-12 in National Football League season opener
After the game, Pederson and offensive lineman Lane Johnson confirmed that they took the play from the Patriots . The game was a sloppy and low scoring affair as there were only 30 points in total and 26 penalties.

However, CBS said the company and Mr Moonves would donate $US20 million ($NZ30.6 million) to groups supporting the #MeToo movement.

It's a done deal: CBS Corp. has ousted its embattled Chairman Leslie Moonves.

The decision comes after 12 women alleged Moonves had sexually harassed or assaulted them, and in more than one case ruined careers by blacklisting women who rejected him.

In later incidents, Golden-Gottlieb says Moonves left his office and returned not wearing trousers and that he threw her against a wall. "I have never used my position to hinder the advancement or careers of women", Moonves said in a statement.

Moonves had been in a corporate battle with Shari Redstone, controlling shareholder in CBS through her company National Amusements, which also controls Viacom.

The CBS board had already hired two law firms to do an investigation. "I haven't talked about this before, because when you think about it, the most powerful media executive in America has now resigned in the wake of this Me Too movement - and he's my boss, or he was my boss", she said at the beginning of the show, adding that Moonves "always treated me fairly and with respect".

CBS has launched an independent investigation into Moonves, who has denied the allegations, reported by the New Yorker's Ronan Farrow.

Moonves has been at the center of legal troubles with CBS for months, and CNBC reported on Thursday the board was considering giving him a $100 million exit package. That's not all. CBS is saying that they are withholding all financial packages pending an investigation into the harassment allegations. As a result of Farrow's article, more women are coming out of the woodwork to share their experiences of harassment, intimidation, and assault at the hands of the executive.
