This is not the first time the California-based company, headed by Internet entrepreneur and Tesla electric auto CEO Elon Musk, has touted plans to send tourists around the Moon.

Why it matters: One lucky passenger, presumably of Japanese descent, will board SpaceX's BFR launch vehicle for an unforgettable trip around the Moon.

According to SpaceX, only 24 humans have been to the moon in history.

SpaceX gave no further details, but said more information would follow on Monday.

The announcement will come Monday, SpaceX tweeted, calling it "an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of traveling to space".

Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, space tourism has happened before.

Danica Patrick's Reaction to Boyfriend Aaron Rodgers' Comeback Win is Hilarious
It really could not have gone better in the first half for the Chicago Bears. "Well, this is what we're paid to do", Rodgers said. Gurley is the better player, facing a much worse defense, so I feel good about this pick even if Lynch gets a ton of carries.

The journey will see SpaceX put its new reusable BFR rocket through its paces.

Other non-astronauts that have flown into space include inventor Gregory Olsen and multimillionaire Dennis Tito, the first tourist in space, after he paid $20 million to spend 8 days on the ISS in April 2001. And Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is also working with his company, Blue Origin, on getting tourists to space.

The BFR is SpaceX's newest rocket, a super powerful launch vehicle with 31 engines and the capacity to lift 150 tons into space.

The private space company, led by billionaire Elon Musk, has previously announced plans to send two people into lunar orbit, but has never revealed who they may be. The revised flight plan is unlikely to take place this year as the BFR rocket has not yet been built, the Associated Press reported. He called the goals at the time "aspirational".

On its website, SpaceX is touting the "first passenger on lunar BFR mission", implying there will be more.
