The FBI reopened its background check into Judge Kavanaugh last week, after Professor Christine Blasey Ford testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that he had assaulted her when they were teenagers in the 1980s.

The Democratic senators accuse Republicans of mishandling confidential background investigation information, and call for Republican staff on the Judiciary Committee to correct what they say is an inaccurate statement in a tweet posted Tuesday that said "nowhere" in the prior background checks was there a "whiff of ANY issue-at all-related in any way to inappropriate sexual behavior or alcohol abuse".

"[Dr. Christine Blasey Ford] could remember none of the key facts: where it happened, when it happened, who got her there, who took her home - all of the sorts of things that are fundamental to a situation like this".

"What neighbourhood was it in? 'I don't remember, '" Trump said at the rally Tuesday in Southaven.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., a Judiciary Committee member, said it would be ideal to make public as much information as possible, allowing for redactions of private or compromising information. But privately, the White House restricted the Federal Bureau of Investigation from delving deeply into Kavanaugh's youthful drinking and exploring whether he had lied to Congress about his alcohol use, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

"I'm sure we'll get over it", he added.

She said Mr Trump was "pointing out factual inconsistencies".

Trump's fellow Republicans control the Senate by a 51-49 margin.

"It is troubling that the committee majority has characterized information from Judge Kavanaugh's confidential background investigation on Twitter, as that information is confidential and not subject to public release, " Democrats, led by Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of IL, wrote to the committee's chairman, Chuck Grassley. No Republicans have said they will vote against Kavanaugh.

Graham (R-S.C.) said Democrats are attempting to "destroy" Kavanaugh over uncorroborated allegations of sexual assault, and confirming him to the Supreme Court is the only "just solution".

Meanwhile, President Trump put out a tweet supporting the judge, saying: "'Wow, such enthusiasm and energy for Judge Brett Kavanaugh", Trump tweeted Wednesday evening. Writing in all capital letters, Trump said when he goes to political rallies, which are organised by Republicans, he sees that voters are angry at the "vicious and despicable" way Democrats are treating his nominee.

White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway on Wednesday echoed the president's newly aggressive approach.

The president seemed to suggest she did not know on what floor of the property the alleged attack had occurred, but Prof Ford told senators she remembered being pushed into a bedroom on the upstairs level. There are facts that she can not remember: "how she got home, how she got there, where the house was, what the date was". Two red state Democrats senators up for re-election in November, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, have also yet to take a position on Kavanaugh. McConnell said on Tuesday that the report should not become public. Roche wrote an opinion piece published by Slate on Wednesday evening, USA time, where he says he was a roommate of Kavanaugh at Yale. "This is all part of the organised effort to delay, obstruct and intimidate, including those of us who will be voting this week".

The FBI interviewed several people, including three who Ford has said attended a 1982 high school gathering in suburban Maryland where she says Kavanaugh's attack occurred, plus another Kavanaugh friend. Judge, identified by Ford as a witness to the alleged assault, has denied any memory of such an incident. The agency has also spoken to a second woman, Deborah Ramirez, who has claimed Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a Yale party when both were freshmen.
