Authorities in Turkey have indicated that Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist known for his criticism of then kingdom, could have been killed at Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul where went missing in on Tuesday.
'Based on their initial findings, the police believe that the journalist was killed by a team especially sent to Istanbul and who left the same day, ' the government source told AFP on Saturday.
The Saudi crown prince downplayed any apparent rift with the U.S. leader and said relations between the two allies remain strong.
Saudi Arabia's consul-general rejected claims about a possible abduction, telling Reuters that his country was helping search for Khashoggi.
Saudi Arabia has insisted that Khashoggi left the consulate before his disappearance.
His interview came a day after Trump told a cheering crowd of supporters at a rally in Southaven, Mississippi, that Saudi King Salman would not last in power unless the USA provided military support for the Arab kingdom.
She said Mr Khashoggi was required to surrender his mobile phone, which is standard practice in some diplomatic missions. "Until otherwise demonstrated, he is still inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and the Saudi authorities are responsible for his safety and well-being", she said in a statement.
