The local leaders and workers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Saturday staged protest against the arrest of Shahbaz Sharif, the president of PML-N and the ex-Chief Minister of Punjab.

According to sources, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif's arrest and the strategy for the by-polls scheduled for October 14 will be discussed during the meeting.

During the hearing, NAB prosecutor told the court that Shahbaz Sharif being former chief minister misused his power and caused a huge loss to national exchequer.

Tarar said that Sharif was improperly arrested on a warrant that was kept secret.

She said her party is being victimized in the name of accountability.

Earlier in the day, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) presented Shahbaz before the court and requested his 15-day remand for further probe into the graft case, but the court allowed 10-day remand, senior legal expert and lawyer Saad Rasool told media.

Supporters of PML-N gathered outside the bureau's office in Lahore amid presence of security personnel, Dawn reported. "Shahbaz Sharif's arrest just before by-elections is unacceptable", she said.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry welcomed the arrest and offered the agency any help it needed. He emphasised that the process of accountability will move forward and the government has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption. Fawad had reportedly also provided "incriminating evidence" against the younger Sharif in the corruption case, making it hard for him to defend himself before NAB's investigators.

Warning the nation of tough times ahead, the premier said the government might go to the IMF (International Monetary Fund) for assistance, said a report in The International News.

PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif condemned the arrest of his younger brother, saying it was "not just regrettable, but also ridiculous".

"The government should avoid politics of revenge and is taking such steps due to the failure of its 100-day programme", he said.

Shahbaz's blue-eyed officers, Lahore Development Authority former director general Ahad Cheema and Fawad Hasan Fawad, are already in NAB custody in the Ashiana Housing case.
