Google Lens helps you search the world around you by recognizing objects with the camera and performing a Google Search for them. And a way to more easily control the myriad connected devices in the home. That's what Google's Pixel Slate is.
It's clear Google's going big on the personalised experience you can get with the Home Hub.
The new device, which is created to control other smart appliances within the home, will come with a 7-inch display, full-range speaker, work with Android, Apple, and Windows devices, and will be priced at $219 in Australia.
Rather than being a hardware innovator, Google has differentiated itself by building strong and smart software features and this is what Google showed off in this year's announcements. With the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, Google added a machine learning-driven Top Shot feature that will grab a burst of images when you press the shutter button. The Slate is thin and light and Google says it's created to be handsome.
Admittedly, Apple has the same approach, although updates aren't always released monthly. We were showed a demo of the speaker's good morning routine, where the speaker wakes you before proceeding to read out the weather, a travel report (including directions), and your calendar appointments for that day. Google will then surface what it thinks is the best of those images, perhaps one in which your kid was not blinking or smiling or was looking away from the camera.
Also announced at the event in NY, the new Google Home Hub smart speaker responds to voice commands like other smart home devices but also features a display from which users can access news and weather information visually, as well as watch YouTube videos, use Google Maps and control other smart home devices. The Slate can also work with Pixelbook Pen that launched previous year.
It includes an embedded security chip and double password protection.
Google says they spent "countless hours" on the design of the Google Home Hub.
Powerful productivity in a slate form.
It also comes with a free six-month subscription to YouTube Music Premium (otherwise £11.99/month) when bought before 31 December 2018. Google says that Hub will simplify your home and life.
A pull-down "dashboard" acts as the smart home center for the Home Hub, so you can manage the various devices in each room independently. So long as they are compatible with Google. The most telling, and coolest, are Google Duplex and call screening.
Indeed, Google Home Hub is the best device on which to manage all your various smart home tech through a single interface, and it supports more than 2 million devices from over 1,000 brands. I did get to check out Google's gimmicky AR stickers, though, which insert cartoon characters or Marvel superheroes into your photos.
Yet Google seems to have gone overboard with their comparison photos that you could see below. You can also share those Live Albums from Hub with others.
In just two short years Google has produced what's arguably the best smartphone camera on the market - and it's done it by using one camera, not two as is the case with its competitors. That means no pics of receipts and random things you don't care about. Google declined to address that further Tuesday, though executives emphasized privacy and security throughout the event in NY.
