"We'd like to thank our customers for their patience during the loss of service on Thursday 6 December and we're sorry for any impact the issue may have caused".

The issue affected nodes in the core networks of customers using two software versions of the Serving GPRS Support Node - Mobility Management Entity (SGSN-MME), Ericsson said, adding that it had taken immediate action to enable service restoration.

"We'd encourage you to use Wi-Fi wherever you can and we are really sorry".

After a day without 3G and 4G data connections, O2 service seems to be back up in Nottingham.

Millions of people have been having problems with their mobile phones this morning, after the O2 network went down.

O2 says it is trying to resolve the issue as fast as possible. Our priority is to restore full data services on the network by tomorrow morning. The machines have been covered up until the issue is fixed. "Ericsson sincerely apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused".

Other operators affected by the Ericsson software blip include Japanese operator SoftBank and GTA TeleGuam.

United Kingdom mobile phone operator O2 and Japan's SoftBank said on Thursday (Dec 6) that tens of millions of their customers were unable to use data due to a glitch with sofware made by Sweden's Ericsson.

An additional seven million customers of Sky, Tesco, Giffgaff, and Lycamobile, which O2 provides services for, are also impacted.

The fragility of the increasingly connected systems that keep modern, Western nations running was underlined Thursday when major telecoms network O2 ceased to transmit mobile data from around 0530 GMT.

Attacks against mobile devices are growing more widespread and more sophisticated, requiring companies to adopt new tools, strategies, and best practices to safeguard their data assets. Here is what business professionals and mobile users need to know about 5G networks.
