The news that Mattis will be leaving sooner than expected comes just days after Brett McGurk, the US envoy for the global coalition to defeat Islamic State (ISIS), on Saturday accelerated his planned departure and announced his resignation.

"I am pleased to announce that our very talented Deputy Secretary of Defense, Patrick Shanahan, will assume the title of Acting Secretary of Defense starting January 1, 2019", Trump tweeted early on Sunday. "He will be great!"

Just one day before turning in his resignation, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis taped a holiday message to his entire department.

Despite Rogin's claim that Paul's foreign policy serves as "bad politics", Trump's decision to withdraw from both Afghanistan and Syria has earned him bipartisan accolades and has made headwinds in Congress.

President Trump took a parting shot at Mattis on Twitter the same day, saying the defense secretary did not share the president's concerns over other countries taking advantage of the United States through military and trade agreements. Mattis had planned to remain defense chief until late February, to allow for a transition.

Outgoing Defense Secretary James Mattis's decision to leave the administration over President Trump's plan to pull USA troops out of Syria is being considered the "definition of patriotism and integrity", at least by his family, according to The Seattle Times.

Outgoing Secretary of Defense James Mattis issued a final holiday message to USA troops on Christmas Eve "holding the line".

The Associated Press reported that McGurk said in a resignation letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that ISIS was on the run, but wasn't yet defeated and that USA work in Syria wasn't yet done.

Mattis' letter in particular emphasized the important role that US alliances play in USA national security. -South Korea Special Measures Agreement, the bilateral allied agreement that governs burden-sharing.

"1. We in the USA military are privileged to defend America, especially at this time of year, for we ensure our fellow Americans celebrate this season of hope in peace and safety". "I DO, and it is being fixed!"
