The boy was released just before 3 p.m., about 90 minutes after he had been found to have a fever of 39.4 C, CBP said. It was the second such death this month.

"I'm deeply saddened by the death of 8-year-old Felipe Alonzo-Gomez last night in U.S. Customs and Border Protections (CBP) custody and offer my condolences to his family", Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Chairman Elect of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus said in a statement. The cause of death was under investigation. Both attempted to migrate to the United States with their families.

Thousands of migrants continue to flood the USA southern border each month - and trapped in the mix are children.

"He wasn't sick on the way; he wasn't sick here", Alonzo Perez told the AP via Gomez Lucas.

Telemundo tracked down the girl's family to a poor village in Guatemala's northern Alta Verapaz region, where Jakelin's mother speaks the Mayan language Q'eqchi.

Felipe Gomez Alonzo was the second Guatemalan child to die this month while being held by USA authorities, sparking outrage from immigration advocates.

The girl and her father, Nery Gilberto Caal Cuz, had been traveling with a group of 163 migrants who were arrested on December 6 near a border crossing in New Mexico. Half an hour later Felipe and his father are transferred to a medical center. "Our thoughts and prayers are with this family during this very hard time".

Marta Larra, a spokeswoman from the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry, said the government expected to receive the official results of the autopsy in roughly a month, and that Gomez's body would probably be returned to the country in about 2 weeks.

The boy died shortly after midnight on December 25, US Customs and Border Protection said.

"I need to see him soon and I'm very sad because he died", she said.

The father said Felipe asked him not to cry because he "was not going to get better", according to the boy's stepsister.

It reported that he and his father were taken to a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where the boy was diagnosed with a cold and a fever, given prescriptions for amoxicillin and ibuprofen, and released on Monday afternoon.

The boy was later sent back to the hospital suffering from nausea and vomiting.

After the second death, the CBP announced it was developing several policy changes late Tuesday.

Agustin Gomez Perez was 47 and in debt, and the path to America would only deepen his obligations.

The federal agency is under attack after Felipe Gómez Alonzo, a young Guatemalan boy, died on Monday evening while being detained at a center in New Mexico.

He and his wife chose 8-year-old Felipe Gomez Alonzo for the journey because he was one of three sons, and the couple had only one daughter.

Oscar Padilla, the Guatemalan consul in Phoenix, confirmed that the father is still detained by the Border Patrol. The father's attorneys said Jakelin "had not suffered from a lack of water or food prior to approaching the border". We do not know what will happen.
