Putin: Russia ready to deploy hypersonic weapon

In Wednesday's test, the weapon was launched from the Dombarovskiy missile base in the southern Ural Mountains.

The Avangard weapon system is built around a hypersonic glide vehicle that takes an elusive path toward its target - even as it travels at more than 20 times the speed of sound, according to a report by state-owned Vesti TV.

The United States' Ground-Based Midcourse Defense missile defense system is officially created to protect against limited threats from countries like North Korea and is not created to negate Russian Federation or China's strategic deterrents. "This has just been completed with absolute success", Putin said during a televised meeting with members of the government. He said Avangard "heads for its target like a meteorite".

He said at the time that Cold War tensions between the USA and Russian Federation "no longer exist" and that in the aftermath of 9/11, the biggest threats come from "terrorists who strike without warning".

The missile that carries the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle is the UR-100NUUTKh, an ICBM-class missile.

Ivanov, who now serves as Putin's adviser, said the Avangard could be fitted to the Soviet-made UR-100UTTKh intercontinental ballistic missile, which is code- named SS-19 Stiletto by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Ivanov added that they could be put in existing silos, sharply reducing the costs of Avangard's deployment.

An eruption just before 4 pm on Saturday lasted around 13 minutes and sent plumes of ash soaring hundreds of metres into the sky. The destructive wave left a trail of uprooted trees and debris strewn across beaches.

"Russia has a new type of strategic weapon", he said, adding that the intercontinental "Avangard" system would be ready for use from 2019.

Mr Borisov said on Thursday it "essentially makes missile defences useless".

Russian Federation says its hypersonic "Avangard" missile can carry nuclear and conventional warheads, reach nearly any point in the world and evade a US-built missile shield.

Putin has been threatening a new arms race amid fears in Russian Federation the US would not renew the New START treaty that limits the development of nuclear weapons by both countries and is due to expire in 2021.

He touted the nuclear-capable weapon, named Avangard, was almost impossible to intercept and would ensure the country's security for decades.
