The United Arab Emirates has reopen its embassy in Damascus - which has been closed for seven years - on Thursday, according to officials. An acting charge d'affaires has already started work there, the UAE Foreign Ministry said.

The UAE and other Gulf Arab supporters of the Syrian opposition view Turkey with suspicion because of its embrace of regional Islamists. But restoring ties with the government of President Bashar al-Assad seemed gradually occurring.

The border crossing between Syria and Jordan was reopened in October.

After almost eight years of war, Assad has recovered control of most of Syria with support from Russia, Iran, and Iranian-backed Shi'ite Muslim groups such as Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Syria was suspended from the Arab League in November 2011, as the death toll was escalating and several regional powers bet on Assad's demise.

Saudi-owned al Arabiya television confirmed the UAE Embassy reopening first reported by Syria's Information Ministry.

Tehran has been a staunch supporter of Assad's government and has expanded its military footprint in Syria throughout the course of the conflict. Eight years after the start of the conflict, President Assad has now regained control of much of the territory thanks to the decisive support of Iran and Russian Federation, as well as Hezbollah's Lebanese Shiite militias.

Arms, training and funds from Arab states were funnelled to Syrian rebels through a programme overseen by the Central Intelligence Agency until U.S. President Donald Trump ordered it shut down a year ago.

The diplomatic thaw comes after the USA announced plans to pull its troops from Syria.

President Donald Trump said last week the United States would pull its troops out of Syria because the Islamic State terror group has been defeated, although some politicians and experts have disagreed on that claim.

It noted that both Syria and Egypt aim to reactivate the Syrian-Egyptian relations first and the Arab relations in general.
