A Chinese court said Saturday that a 15-year jail sentence for a Canadian national charged with drug smuggling was too "lenient" and remanded his case for a retrial.

She was the third Canadian to be detained by China since the December 1st arrest of Meng.

The sentencing of foreign drug dealers in China has drawn a lot of attention overseas and some foreign governments strongly oppose the results, but Chinese judicial principle is never affected, which rules that "anyone who commits crimes in the territory of China would be judged equally as said by China's Criminal Law", Ruan Qilin, a professor at the China University of Political Science and Law, told the Global Times on Thursday.

Alberta teacher Sarah McIver has been released from custody in China and returned to Canada.

The Canadian government said earlier it was following the case but has released no details.

Schellenberg is the first foreigner to be tried in China on drug-smuggling charges in nine years.

McIver's detention was confirmed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on December 19, who said at the time that the detention was more "routine" than the previous two cases.

Meng was arrested at the request of United States prosecutors and faces extradition on charges of violating sanctions on Iran.

The Canadian national was held by local authorities and believed to have smuggled an "enormous amount" of drugs, ECNS, the English-language website of China News Service, reported citing runsky.com, a website run by the Dalian Radio and Television Station.

In a statement to Daily Hive, Global Affairs spokesperson Richard Walker confirmed that the detention had taken place this month, but that the person has since been released and has returned to Canada.

"Due to the provisions under the Privacy Act, no further information can be disclosed", he added.

Asked about the Canadian's detention at a press conference Thursday, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Hua Chunying said she was "not aware of the specifics of the case".

Previously, two Canadians - Michael Spavor who is a consultant on North Korea, and former diplomat Michael Kovrig - employed by thinktank International Crisis Group, were detained by China on suspicion of "harm to national security".
