Congo braces for election results after commission meets overnight
11 January, 2019, 12:32
As Congo anxiously awaits the outcome of the presidential election, many in the capital say they are convinced that the opposition won and that the delay in announcing results is allowing manipulation in favor of the ruling party.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has said that he has taken notice with a satisfied view of the provisional results of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of the Congo released on Thursday.
Tshisekedi's warm words towards Kabila fuelled suspicions among Fayulu's supporters that there had been some sort of behind-the-scenes deal. One vehicle was filled with military personnel in combat gear. "Mr. Tshisekedi was named by Mr. Kabila and we can not accept a plot against the will of the people".
It was not immediately clear whether Fayulu would challenge the election results in court.
Fayulu denounced the results as an "electoral hold up" that were "rigged, fabricated and invented" and do "not reflect the truth of the ballots".
The DRC's Catholic Church, he argued, had reached the same conclusion after garnering data from its 40,000 election observers across the country.
There is also a rapidly developing story that the diploma in Marketing and Communications Tshisekedi may have submitted as a condition of his candidacy might not have existed.
According to the National Electoral Commission (Ceni), Mr Tshisekedi received 38.5% of the vote in the 30 December election.
"There's no spirit of revenge", said Felix Tshisekedi, the candidate of the longtime opposition UDPS party. Fayulu got 6.37 million ballots, while Shadary obtained 4.36 million, he said.
Fayulu, however, is backed by ex-rebel Jean-Pierre Bemba and former governor Moise Katumbi, two of Kabila's fiercest rivals.
Apart from the fact that majority of the observers expected the authorities to favour the anointed candidate of the president, Joseph Kabila - who picked Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary to be his successor; there is increased concern over the position of Martin Fayulu, another opposition candidate who had a healthy lead in pre-election polling. "Tshisekedi, with his weaker network, looks like being the junior partner in his accommodation with the Kabila establishment". Mr Tshisekedi's spokesman, Louis d'Or Ngalamulume, said there was "never any deal".
Tshisekedi "is provisionally proclaimed elected as president", CENI President Corneille Nangaa said.

The largely peaceful election faced numerous problems as many voting machines that Congo used for the first time malfunctioned.
Many noted that Fayulu's campaign suffered significantly more harassment than Tshisekedi's, and that the latter's rhetoric towards erstwhile enemies underwent a dramatic change in recent days.
But election chief Corneille Nangaa declared Tshisekedi the victor with 38.57 percent of the vote, just ahead of Fayulu with 34.8 percent.
Police installed metal barriers and blocked traffic outside the electoral commission as it continued meetings that began late Tuesday.
The government has cut internet service since the day after the election to prevent speculation on social media about who won, and blocked some radio stations. It remained off in parts of the country on Thursday.
Kabila has ruled since 2001 in the troubled nation rich in the minerals key to smartphones around the world and has amassed vast wealth.
He is barred from serving three consecutive terms, but during more than two years of election delays many Congolese feared he'd find a way to stay in office.
A two-year wait for a new leader is coming to an end in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but already a post-election crisis is brewing.
Gleeful Tshsekedi supporters in Kinshasa, a lively opposition stronghold, said they were delighted by the win and happy to see Kabila step down. "This is the beginning of national reconciliation".
