Greg Clark says Brexit uncertainty is shaking investors confidence

It Seems Britons Don't Want to Leave Europe After All - Poll Shows Tory rebels inflict Commons Brexit defeat on May

THERESA MAY'S Brexit plans have received a major setback after she suffered a second damaging Commons defeat within 24 hours.

Image: The Commons will vote on Mrs May's deal on Tuesday.

She would then have a further seven days to put a motion to the House of Commons, which MPs could amend to try to direct the government´s strategy.

"It could give the winning party a renewed mandate to negotiate a better deal for Britain and secure support for it in Parliament and across the country".

Some EU officials think that the United Kingdom will ask for an extension of the negotiating period immediately after next week's vote.

But Conservative Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg, who favours leaving without a withdrawal agreement, said it would not stop the United Kingdom exiting on 29 March. This would appear to dash May's hopes that she will get substantial "reassurances" from Brussels before Tuesday.

It all points to a scenario in which the prime minister, who leads a weak minority government, can't dictate what happens next, while an emboldened Parliament increasingly asserts its will.

"Rather than increasing the likelihood of a "no deal" outcome, we expect either the deal to scrape through, owing to last minute concessions to the key Brexit groups, or if parliament forces the government to adopt a different or more market positive Brexit stance", says Rochester.

She told Corbyn: "The conclusions of the December European Council went further than before in seeking to address the concerns of this house, and they have legal status".

The Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom said there were "some concerns" about his decision and asked him to confirm it was taken with "full advice" from the Commons clerk Sir David Natzler.

Parliament will now spend the next five days debating Theresa May's Brexit deal, with a vote expected to take place on January 15th. There's no guarantee Labour could marshal the majority support in Parliament needed to topple the government - and even if it did, a new election would not automatically stop the Brexit countdown clock.

Conservative managers have held behind-the-scenes talks with MPs over the past few weeks to win over opponents to her deal. Most commentators had expected one to be moved following the vote on May's deal next week.

Parliament is not due to sit on January 18, so three working days will be January 21.

His urgent amendment won by 308 votes to 297, another blow for May and her negotiators. Instead, she has pressed ahead with a vote she looks set to lose after failing to win over her nominal Northern Irish allies.

In a sign of the anger and division Brexit has sown among politicians, the motion prompted bad-tempered scenes in Parliament, as Conservatives accused Speaker John Bercow of contravening parliamentary convention by allowing a vote on the amendment.

But Mr Corbyn said Labour did not "endorse or accept" the initiative, backing union leaders including the TUC's Frances O'Grady, who said the amendment "makes no change to a bad deal for working people's jobs and rights".

With the European Union departure date fast approaching, other options open to May could be to seek an extension to the two-year Article 50 period beyond March 29, when Britain is scheduled to end its 46-year membership of the EU.

The backstop is a safety net for the possibility that negotiations between the European Union and United Kingdom break down and no deal or customs arrangements are reached.

But he warned the UK's options were narrowing given the need to avoid, at all costs, a no-deal exit which he claimed was "simply not viable for practical reasons".

She also told the House of Commons: "It was just brought to my attention details of a threat that I've just received calling me a traitor who should be hung for treason".
