A USA defense official told Fox News on Friday that the US -led military coalition in Syria started the process of removing troops from the region, but wouldn't confirm further details for security purposes.

Trump's threat on Sunday came amid tensions between the U.S. and Turkey over the fate of Washington's Syrian Kurdish allies in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group following his announcement last month that he plans to withdraw USA forces from Syria.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to "devastate" Turkey's economy if it carries out a military offensive against Kurdish fighters in Syria, drawing a response from Ankara which warned Washington against "shadowing" the countries' strategic partnership with "terrorist propaganda". Turkey views some Kurdish groups in the region as terrorist organizations and Kurds make up the majority of US-allied fighters operating in Syria in the civil war against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime. "We will protect Kurds and other Syrians against all terrorist threats".

The latest comments follow tensions between the US and Turkey over the fate of Washington's Syrian Kurdish allies in the fight against Islamic State group jihadists.

"Mr @realDonaldTrump Terrorists can't be your partners & allies". That drew a rebuke from Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan who called his comments "a serious mistake". "We also benefit but it is now time to bring our troops back home".

The Kurdish YPG has been a U.S. ally in the fight against the Islamic State group and it controls swaths of northern Syria.

The president also vowed that the U.S.

Pompeo told reporters that he spoke with Turkey's foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, on Saturday.

Pompeo said Friday that Washington recognized "the Turkish people's right and Erdogan's right to defend their country from terrorists".

Trump's decision to call back USA troops in Syria, who were first deployed in 2015, was followed a day later by the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who wrote a letter to the president saying he had the right to have a secretary of defense "whose views are better aligned with yours".

Last month, Trump announced that he wanted USA troops out of Syria - a decision that resulted in the resignations of Defense Secretary James Mattis and Brett McGurk, the special presidential envoy for the global coalition to counter ISIS. "Morale is good" among diplomats, he said.
