Katie Beers' joy quickly turned to deep concern when she learned 13-year-old Jayme Closs had been found alive in rural Wisconsin almost three months after police say a man shot and killed her parents and then abducted the girl from their home.

Patterson is scheduled to go to court Monday where he is expected to be formally charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of kidnapping.

The girl had been missing since her parents, James and Denise Closs, were found shot to death on October 15 at the family's home near Barron.

Jayme had been missing for almost three months Thursday when she approached a stranger near the small, isolated north woods town of Gordon and pleaded for help. Officers arrested Patterson, 21, minutes later, based on Jayme's description of his vehicle. He was jailed on suspicion of kidnapping and homicide.

Almost three years ago, Patterson worked for one day at the same meat products facility where Jayme's parents also worked - the Jennie-O Turkey Store plant in Barron - the company's president said.

Nutter said Closs appeared traumatized but in good physical condition, wearing an oversized sweatshirt and large shoes that were clearly not her own. Closs' grandfather Robert Naiberg said on Saturday that the only thing the family knows for sure is no one knew Patterson.

"He didn't know Jayme, he didn't know (her parents) Denise or Jim", Naiberg said.

"We're running on Jayme's time right now", he said.

Residents who knew Patterson described him as quiet. [But] he knew what he was doing.

Jake Thomas Patterson grew up in Gordon, a sprawling township of 645 people tucked into the snowy evergreen forests about 35 miles (55 kilometers) south of Lake Superior.

The news that Jayme was safe brought joy and relief to her hometown of Barron, population 3,300 and about 60 miles from where she was found.

"And I would tell her that this experience might feel like it's defining, it might feel like that's who she is now, but it doesn't have to be", Smart said.

"When we talk to kids, we talk about if someone is breaking your safety rules, you look for someone who is not breaking your safety rules, so Jayme escaped and went to the first person she saw and said that she needed help", Straub said. Smith wrote that the family faces a long road to recover from the ordeal.

Kidnapping victim Jayme Closs spent her first night in her new home next to her aunt, according to a Facebook post Saturday.

On Thursday, Closs was able to escape from a cabin before flagging down a person walking a dog in Gordon and asking for help, authorities said.

Fitzgerald added that while Patterson had a job at a turkey plant for less than two days, more than three years ago, he "did not have any contact with Jayme's parents, who also worked at the turkey plant".

"I don't understand it yet myself", Fitzgerald said.

Smart said she would tell Jayme that "she is a survivor and she is a hero".

At a press conference yesterday Barron County Sheriff Fitzgerald said the teen told the Kasinskas 'he killed my parents and took me'.

Ownership of that rural cabin was transferred to a credit union by Patterson's father shortly after Jayme was kidnapped.
