January 14, 2019 (EIRNS)-The China National Space Administration held a press conference this morning on the ongoing Chang'e-4 mission, and future lunar exploration missions. Though plants are grown inside International Space Station, it is for the first time a seed is being sprouted on a solar system outside the earth in a lunar mini biosphere.

The plans underscore China's ambitions in space at a time when the USA is curtailing NASA's budget and increasingly handing over space exploration to commercial adventurers, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

Officials at the Chinese space agency say they now plan to send a probe to Mars in 2020 and aim to follow that up with manned missions to the planet.

Chinese scientists are also attempting to grow seeds from rapeseed, potato and mouse-ear cress, and are trying to hatch fruit fly eggs.

With the success of the cotton underway, China plans to continue its plans for further space exploration The goal of the next moon probe will be to bring samples of the moon back to Earth.

The tasks of the Chang'e-4 include astronomical observation, surveying the moon's terrain and mineral makeup and measuring the neutron radiation and neutral atoms to study the environment of its far side.

The Chang'e 4 lander and Yutu 2 rover have now entered lunar night, and have gone into a sort of sleep mode as a result.

It should be also noted that the Chinese space agency had carried seeds of potatoes and oilseed rape seeds to the lunar surface, but none of these succeeded in sprouting under harsh conditions in moon.

According to NASA, it will be one of the sky's "most dazzling shows", as the moon will be at its closest point to Earth, making the moon appear slightly bigger and a lot brighter, an event that is often referred to as a "supermoon".

The mission became the first to touch down on the surface of the far side of the moon earlier this month.

Chang'e-5 will be followed by three further missions that will explore the barren surface of the Moon and test equipment for an global lunar research base. Rather, they could harvest and grow their food on the moon. Among those organisms aboard the lander are seeds that could be the foundation for human settlement.

We could probably make some nice sweaters from moon-grown cotton.
