The criminal charges in Brooklyn and Seattle come as trade talks between China and the United States are scheduled for this week.

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced the charges on Monday afternoon in Washington. At left is Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker confirmed that the DOJ will file an extradition request by the deadline of January 30.

A separate indictment from Washington state accuses Huawei, its USA affiliate, Skycom and Meng, of stealing trade secrets from the telecommunications company T-Mobile.

The indictments allege that Huawei, its affiliate in Iran, and Meng committed a host of crimes, ranging from stealing trade secrets to obstruction of justice.

Meng's arrest has touched off an ongoing diplomatic furor that resulted Sunday in the firing of John McCallum as Canada's ambassador to China after he publicly expressed confidence in her ability to fight extradition to the United States.

The Department of Justice charged Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Monday on several counts of fraud as U.S. President Donald Trump applies more pressure on China's beleaguered economy.

Skycom is said to be a Huawei affiliate that was doing business in Iran, though the USA government accuses Huawei of covering up this fact with lying and committing bank and wire fraud to cover its tracks. "China should be concerned about criminal activities by Chinese companies - and China should take action".

In addition, a 13-count indictment charged four defendants, including Huawei and its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, with financial fraud.

Prosecutors say that Huawei stole trade secrets from T-Mobile, and that it offered bonuses to employees who were successful in obtaining technology from rivals. In one case, Huawei tried to steal part of Tappy's robotic arm to allow engineers in China to replicate the device.

The indictments came amid tense trade negotiations between the United States and China. Trump has postponed a scheduled increase in US tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods from 10 per cent to 25 per cent during the talks. If so, they would likely be scheduled months later.

"The huge influence the Chinese government hold towards Chinese companies is a tremendous threat to the US".

Canadian officials arrested Meng on a USA warrant on December 1.
