President Donald Trump is expected to urge Venezuelan military officials to back the country's self-declared interim president Juan Guaido and allow humanitarian aid to flow into Venezuela.

Despite having the world's largest oil reserves, Venezuela is gripped by widespread malnutrition, disease and violence after 20 years of socialist rule launched by the late President Hugo Chávez.

Sanders says Trump would warn the Venezuelan military that the USA "knows where military officials and their families have money hidden throughout the world".

"You will lose everything", Trump warned in his speech, declaring, "Today I ask every member of the Maduro regime: end this nightmare of poverty, hunger and death for your people".

The ongoing crisis in Venezuela hits home for many now living in South Florida.

Branson said he hopes that the armed forces, until now loyal to Maduro, will allow the aid to reach Venezuelans suffering from chronic shortages of food and medicine. Those left behind struggle to afford scarce supplies of food and medicine as inflation soars.

The Trump administration has moved swiftly to try to shore up Guaido's government-in-waiting, but is struggling to move promised humanitarian aid into Venezuela with Maduro retaining control over the military.

"We want to make it a joyous occasion", Branson said in his first interview since he announced the concert on a brief video posted online last week.

In Maduro-friendly Cuba, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said he urged the more than 100 ambassadors and heads of mission serving on the communist island to reject "the U.S. military's aggression of Venezuela" in a meeting.

"The narcoterrorist tyranny of Nicolas Maduro continues to block critical humanitarian relief for those who continue to suffer under his regime", the Florida Republican said, adding that the USA stands by the Venezuelan people in their fight for "democracy and freedom".

"There are certain lines and Maduro knows what they are".

Venezuela's power struggle is headed to a potentially violent showdown Saturday, when Guaido will try to run caravans of US humanitarian aid across the Venezuelan border from Colombia. "The consequences will be severe and they will be swift", Rubio said, also warning Maduro not to harm U.S. personnel working in the country, adding that the United States would also respond if aid workers were targeted.
